NEW ORLEANS NEW YEARS LIVE
It's time to celebrate the New Year with live music from the French Quarter including the Rebirth Brass Band, jazz with Leroy Jones and Ellis Marsalis, Little Freddie King's country blues, funk from Jon Cleary and songs from Charmaine Neville. Start the New Year right with American Routes.
RECORDING NEW ORLEANS: BASIN STREET RECORDS WITH JON CLEARY & KERMIT RUFFINS
New Orleans' own Basin Street Records is a homegrown record label featuring superstars of the local sound like the Rebirth Brass Band, Davell Crawford, Jason Marsalis and Kermit Ruffins. The label got its start with a live recording of Kermit's band at the Uptown club Tipitina's in 1997. Now, over two decades later and several Grammy Awards under its belt, Basin Street Records still holds true to the sounds of New Orleans. We talk with Basin Street founder Mark Samuels about the label's history. We listen in on the artists who call it home, including Jon Cleary, whose "Quarantini Sessions" streamed live from his Funk Headquarters in the 9th Ward and helped us get through these challenging times. Then, a live concert and conversation with Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers from Esplanade Studios in the Historic Treme neighborhood of New Orleans.

THE EMPEROR AND THE PROFESSOR OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: ERNIE K-DOE & PROFESSOR LONGHAIR
We recall two grand figures of New Orleans music beginning with Ernie K-Doe, the surreal soul man of catchy songs, and flamboyant antics in New Orleans R&B. Ben Sandmel who wrote Ernie K-Doe: The R&B Emperor of New Orleans joins the carnivalesque conversation. Then a piano tribute to Professor Longhair by Dr. John, Jon Cleary and George Porter, live from the legendary New Orleans club Tipitina's, named after Longhair's most famous song. We also play the original recordings with commentary from Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, producer Jerry Wexler, and studio recordist Cosimo Matassa.
CHUCK LEAVELL & JON CLEARY
Meet two piano professors from the South with two differing styles. First up, from Macon, GA, Chuck Leavell has played in a few of Rock's most iconic bands, from the Allman Brothers to the Rolling Stones. And while piano might be his day job, he's also a keeper of a Georgia forest and an honorary forest ranger! We talk to Chuck about his love of the keys and the trees. Then, it's a lesson in New Orleans funk a la keyboard with Jon Cleary, who breaks down the elements and reveals the Latin tinge to New Orleans piano favorites.
